You related these atrocities to what was done by "many of our people"... That's problematic. Are you teaching your children to identify with the murderers and racists? Is that what being "white" means to you? "Our people"?
I would teach my children that these things were perpetrated by people. Give them context as a cautionary tale. Because in the end we are all people.
