Yes! Partner is the perfect word for what we mean to each other. In the US the word "partner" is only ever heard for same-sex relationships and businesses, so I was confused when I moved to New Zealand. Now I love the word partner because, as you say, husband and wife are such loaded terms. I think the word reinforces the true nature of marriage - working together to make life work.
