We just became citizens in New Zealand this year, seven years after leaving New York City. We celebrated Thanksgiving with turkey and cranberry sauce.
It was difficult to move here. Took nine months to find a job for the work visa (through a recruiter, highly recommended), but almost anyone with some kind of skill (any construction worker) can do it. Free medical kicks in as soon as you arrive, no residency required. Must have no criminal convictions or pre-existing medical conditions, though. The hardest, most expensive part was moving the cat, due to medical checkups and mandatory quarantine. The whole move, including shipping container, legal fees, the pet, flights, etc cost about $15,000. So, not easy, but far from impossible. Aside from the paperwork, not much different from moving from one state in the US to another. New Zealand is highly recommended, and Australia has even more jobs available.
