It's important to mention the StageCraft process which started with the Mandalorian and is now used in a great many feature films. In that process, pretty much the only real thing on screen is the actor's face. It also limits camera angles to horizontal straight-on shots, which is boring and annoying.

I agree that the use of VFX is just obscene at this point, and I'm glad you mentioned how bad the quality is now. LOTR is the perfect example - those elephants looked REAL! Now nothing does.
