It's good that you trust the scientists, but you're overlooking a crucial point. Humans. They're constantly innovating to avoid catastrophe. For example, our population exceeded the earth's carrying capacity about 4 billion people ago. We overcame that with intensive agricultural modification (contributing to the next apocalypse, climate change). And if we find a way to feed poor countries, there is no limit to our population growth. Y2K would have been an apocalypse if not for the army of coders who cranked out the patch in time. Nuclear war is still on the table, perhaps tomorrow. Only 2012 has safely passed.
But that should give us hope. There are millions of very smart people working on climate change solutions. Let's hope they're as successful as their predecessors.
