I think this stems from the previously unlikely achievement of Maslow's Pyramid. So many of us are well-fed and secure and can turn our energies to greater things. That used to be rare but no longer. In fact, many of us believe we have the obligation to care and fret and act, especially in cases like climate change where inaction holds both collective and individual doom.
