I think the reason Twitter had such an outsized influence was the flock of journalists there. Lazy journos and bloggers used it for "man on the street" quotes. Rather than go out to an actual street to find real people, they could just scroll down and quote.
That and famous personalities had a tendency to say what would never have made it past a publicist in the old days.
No, no one will miss the cesspool that was Twitter, but, like children, we'll make another one looks just like it.
