I had always heard that name brand supermarkets send their older, leftover, near their sell-by date meats and vegetables to their stores in poorer neighborhoods. I didn't believe it until I moved to Queens, when I was poor, and saw it for myself. I only shopped there once, though, due to my perceptions of safety. Instead, I drove 15 minutes to proper stores. They cost a little more but it was real food.
I also noticed that stores in poorer neighboroods stock sugary, salty, processed, canned and boxed foods, more soda, more candy, not because they are racist but because that's what their customers buy.
I was about three quarters through your article before I realized it wasn't satire. You honestly believe this is about racism? This is about food, about nutrition, the core energy that powers your day, what your children grow from. This is life and death. If you're waiting for Trader Joe's to solve your problem, that's the problem.
