Good article on pollination, but bad news for your wife - pumpkins are monoecious. You'll get all male flowers. When you do get a female, it lasts one morning, waiting to be pollinated, with nary a male around. We have no shortage of bees and butterflies in our garden yet still we must hand-pollinate our pumpkins. Keep trying. Pumpkins are tough to grow.
