America is a proscriptive culture, sensitive to negative outcomes. Their religious roots mean marriage is all or nothing, people are good or bad, and so affairs are black and white. Of course, life is grey. The French, as a prescriptive culture, navigate in grey better because they are aware of the positive outcomes.
